AICPA Honors Accounting Professor with Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award

Weirich’s impact extends beyond the classroom, as he has co-authored several influential textbooks, including the widely used Accounting & Auditing Research: Tools and Strategies.

The AICPA® & CIMA have recognized Thomas R. Weirich, PhD, CPA, as the recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Award for his outstanding teaching, research and service throughout his 50-year career. This prestigious annual award honors full-time college educators who are distinguished for excellence in teaching and have achieved national prominence in the accounting profession.

“Dr. Weirich brings public accounting to life in the classroom, bridging the gap to the real world and preparing them for the future,” says Denese Ennis, Director of Member Engagement & Academics Michigan Association of CPAs. “Dr. Weirich not only prepares students but helps them succeed.”

His passion and impact on students and the profession have been recognized with several awards, including the School of Accounting/Beta Alpha Psi’s Outstanding Teacher Award, the Ameritech/SBC Teaching Award, and the College of Business Dean’s Teaching Award. His dedication to students is exemplified through his service learning exercises, where he mentored and supervised forensic accounting investigations for law enforcement agencies.

The accounting profession requires passionate, driven, open-minded individuals to help forge the way for new students and future professionals”, said Jan Taylor, CPA, CGMA, Ph.D., Academic in Residence and Senior Director, Academic and Student Engagement at the AICPA. “We are honored to be part of an organization that promotes excellence in the field of academia and to present this award to such a deserving individual.”

Dr. Weirich’s impact extends beyond the classroom, as he has co-authored several influential textbooks, including the widely used Accounting & Auditing Research: Tools and Strategies (10th Edition — 2021). This text has been adopted by numerous universities, CPA firms, and corporations for staff training purposes.

State CPA societies and individuals submit award nominations, with self-nominations not accepted. The award’s eligibility requirements include being a current full-time or recently retired accounting educator, distinguished for excellence in teaching, involvement in curriculum development, contribution to the accounting profession and embodying the philosophy of the CPA Vision.
